My family and I couldn’t resist cracking a few (by “few,” I mean a million zillion) dam jokes – it’s practically a requirement! This is also a great place to stretch your legs after leaving Vegas.
- Lake Mead: Just a stone’s throw from Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is perfect for a quick stop to soak in the desert scenery. The shimmering water against the rugged landscape makes for stunning photo ops and a great spot to regroup.
- Kingman, AZ: As you cruise along Route 66, you’ll pass through Kingman, a town full of nostalgic charm. Stop by Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner for a classic burger, milkshake, and retro vibes. The kids loved the bright pink Cadillac parked outside and the over-the-top menu items! Don’t miss the Historic Route 66 Museum for fun photo opportunities and souvenirs that celebrate the golden age of road trips.
- Williams, AZ: Known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” Williams is a must-visit if you have extra time. We planned to visit Bearizona Wildlife Park but ran out of time. It’s famous for its drive-thru tour, where you can spot black bears, wolves, and more. Most people spend about an hour here, but you can drive through as many times as you’d like before exiting. Williams itself is also a fun little town to explore, with its Route 66 vibes and charming shops. If you want to soak up more of what this town has to offer, consider spending the night here before heading to the Grand Canyon.

- Start at the Visitor Center: This is your go-to hub for all things Grand Canyon. The kids loved learning about the canyon’s history and geology. From here, head to Mather Point, which offers some of the most accessible and panoramic views of the canyon. There’s ample parking, and all three shuttle bus lines start here.
- Yavapai Point: A short walk or shuttle ride from Mather Point, this viewpoint gives you incredible vistas and is a bit less crowded. If you’re looking for an easy way to experience the canyon’s majesty, this is it.
- Yaki Point: Hands down, our favorite spot for sunset! Hop on the Orange Line shuttle to the very last stop, and you’ll find yourself at Yaki Point. Arrive about an hour before sunset to find a secluded spot. Watching the sun dip below the canyon rim and light up the walls with fiery hues was absolutely magical. There’s nothing else like it.
- Rim Trail: For families, the Rim Trail is the easiest way to explore. It’s mostly flat and offers stunning views at every turn. If you’re up for a bit more adventure, consider hiking a short way down the Bright Angel Trail or South Kaibab Trail. My boys loved these trails, but I opted to stay on the rim (this momma’s legs weren’t up for the climb back!).
